Common Features of Green Building
Building GREEN means incorporating every
aspect of the project from concept to
completion into a unified principal of
sustainability and environmental responsibility.
A by-product of this type of construction is a
more comfortable, healthier and more
affordable living experience for the people
inhabiting a green built home or working in a
green built office.
The entire community benefits from green
building. Even existing homes that were built
before green building standards were
established benefit from having green building
introduced into their cities. A green building
has a much smaller foot print on the
environment than what I will call for lack of a
better term a brown built building. A green
office or complex puts a smaller strain on
infrastructure resources.
Green building not only reduces our
dependence on foreign fuel sources, but
some green homes and buildings not only
produce their own energy, they also can
produce a surplus of energy that can be
returned to the power grid.
A home built to green standards means lower
maintenance and less replacement cost for
the home owner. Schools, hospitals, and
commercial buildings built to green standards
mean lower operational costs and less
replacement of vital systems, and smaller
impact on community resources and services.
The most efficient green buildings are zero
energy consumption.
As more and more homes are built or
renovated to green standards and as local
governments insist that all new city and county
buildings be built to green standards
everyone will benefit from communities that
are giving back instead of consuming natural
resources.
Demand for green building is growing. A
recent study by NAHB and McGraw-Hill
Construction projects that by 2010, between
5% and 10% of new construction starts will be
green projects.
You can be sure that as new technologies and
new materials and products are introduced to
the market place the green builder will be the
first to make use of them.

Green building is not a
goal, it is a reality for
those leading the
movement.
It is just a matter of time
before green will be the
standard. The time to
get on board is now.
Educated buyers are
more aware than ever
of the benefits of
building green.
Entire communities are
adopting green building
standards and soon it
will be part of the
licensing requirement
for general contractors.
